As we start the year with quadmesters and the threat of COVID 19, Assumption rises to the challenge offering our students labs and skills to enhance their learning. Each of science teachers has carried on the rich tradition of inquiry based learning and a hands on approach to science, while exploring virtual options as well.

Best Wishes
It is wish a mixed emotions that we wish some of our favourite science teaches goodbye as they leave Assumption to follow their dreams. Although we wish you all the best we will also miss you and your contributions to the ACS science department.

University of Waterloo Chemistry Exam
Several of our seniors recently participated in the annual University of Waterloo Chemistry Exams. These rigorous papers are meant to probe the chemistry knowledge of the brightest students and are attempted by participants from around the world. This year, as was the case in the past,our Raiders performed extremely well scoring significantly higher than the Canadian and world averages at both grade 11 and grade 12 levels.
Grade 12 Exam Results for Assumption:
The top three performs at Assumption are:
Akash Narshana, Alexander Borden, and Michael Bouliane.
It is worth mentioning that both Akash Narshana and Alexander Borden received an Elemental Title meaning that they scored in the top 200 in US and Canada. In the world ranking Akash Narshana placed 110 (94th percentile) and Alexander Borden placed 273 in the world ( 87th percentile) out of 2201 participants.
Grade 11 Exam Results.
The top three performers at Assumption are:
Siyan Llu, Gazwan Nasif and Jiadong You.
Siyan Llu placed 376 in the world, out of 4372 participants (90th percentile) and earned the Elemental Title.

Grade 11 Yeast Lab
For Catholic Education Week Mrs. Brunone's Grade 11 Biology class examined how fermentation in yeast allows bread to rise. We will be completing a spirometery lab this week to determine tidal volume.

Science Olympiad 2017
Assumption wins 3rd PLACE OVERALL at the 2017 Science Olympiad.
Both teams did extremely well and competed in events ranging from computer science, through biology, chemistry and physics.Dr, Howser the Dean of Science of University of Windsor with Dahn and Carly .

Cancer Researcher @ Assumption
Tyler Lalonde a pH.D student at University of Western visited Assumption on December 6th to speak to our grade 10, grade 12 and IB students about future research in biology and chemistry at the University of Western Ontario.
Tyler talked to the students about how to diagnose pancreatic cancer using drugs that target DNA.
