Science Olympiad 2017

Assumption wins 3rd PLACE OVERALL at the 2017 Science Olympiad.

Both teams did extremely well and competed in events ranging from computer science, through biology, chemistry and physics.

Dr, Howser the Dean of Science of University of Windsor with Dahn and Carly .

                              Great job Raiders!!!!

Cancer Researcher @ Assumption

Tyler Lalonde a pH.D student at University of Western visited Assumption on December 6th to speak to our grade 10, grade 12 and IB students about future research in biology and chemistry at the University of Western Ontario.
Tyler talked to the students about how to diagnose pancreatic cancer using drugs that target DNA.

University of Waterloo Winners!!

Several of our senior science students participated recently in the annual University of Waterloo Chemistry Exam. These rigorous papers are meant to probe the chemistry knowledge of the brightest students who have completed or are currently taking senior chemistry courses. As usual the Raiders performed extremely well.
grade 12 student Catherine Pham placed 1st in Windsor in the Chemistry 13 Exam in which was written by over 2000 from across Canada. Congratulations Catherine and good luck next year at the university.
Twenty grade 11 students participated in the Avogadro exam written by over 4200 participants from across Canada. From these the top three at Assumption are:
In the third place: Dahn Phan who also placed in the 80th percentile in Canada.
In the second place: Monika Kojic, who placed 2nd in Windsor and also placed in the 80th percentile in Canada.
Finally in first place: Alexander Borden (aka Quatro) who placed 1st in Windsor and was in the 80th percentile in Canada.

Science Science Science!!

ACS Science Fair was held on May 1, 2017.

Namitha presented "the Power of Mud" and illustrated how we can use pond and manufactured mud to grow bacteria that will produce a biofilm to produce energy.

Portia and Martina showed us tthat using salt as a preservative on fries desicates them so that they won't mould or rot.

Rory's project on Cryogenic illustrated how protists can be frozen in liguid nitrogen and then thawed back to life using cyopreservants such as glycerol and DMSO.

Congratulations to our students for performing some outstanding science!

We're Making Slime!!

Mrs. Brunone's grade 9 and 10 classes made slime to investigate polymerization reactions.

The grade 10 class learned about synthesis reactions and the law of conservation of mass

The grade 9 classes studied molecular compounds names and
formulas.

Physics Competition

On March 25th, Adam N, Allie K, Lorenzo P and Catherine P traveled to the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics in Waterloo to complete the first every Ontario Wide Physics Competition.  The day consisted of our team engaging in 6 different 'Physics Fights' which lasted an hour each against schools from all across Ontario.  When the day was done our team managed to achieve Third Place in a very competitive field.  Way to go Raiders!
